Xuân Vinh – Dreaming of Preserving Cultural Values Through Sustainable Education

A Commitment to Education Rooted in Deep Awareness
Xuân Vinh began as a math enthusiast but has always been passionate about education. To Vinh, education is only effective when learners understand its purpose and how knowledge can benefit their lives. He was part of the organizing team for the "Route to Knowledge" project by Sugar Vietnam, which supported children in shelters with their studies. This experience ignited his desire to contribute more to helping underprivileged children in their quest for knowledge.
One memorable story involves Vinh teaching an 8th grader who, though supposed to be in 9th grade, had been held back two years. The boy wasn’t interested in studying and only loved soccer, aspiring to become a football player to both follow his passion and earn a good living. Vinh patiently explained that no matter the career path, a foundational education is essential. Even as a soccer player, certain skills and knowledge are necessary to unlock more opportunities. This conversation inspired the boy to start putting effort into his studies, and Vinh saw remarkable progress in him.
This experience solidified Vinh’s desire to dedicate himself to education. He aims to:
- Support disadvantaged children in accessing learning opportunities for better growth.
- Help students balance their passions and academic pursuits to attain a foundational level of cultural and intellectual education, as life encompasses many aspects that require knowledge.

A Vision for Education in Cultural Heritage
At just 17, Vinh has an enduring passion for seemingly old-fashioned treasures—the cultural heritage of Vietnam. He is particularly interested in traditional arts like “Đờn ca tài tử” and “Cải lương,” inspired by stories from his grandparents and TV programs like Ký Ức Vui Vẻ. However, Vinh has noticed with concern that these traditional art forms are fading, replaced by modern commercial music that dominates the younger generation’s attention.
It’s time for action.
Vinh participated in the Vietjet Research Lab project, where participants explored Gen Z topics. He examined the current preferences of young people and contrasted them with the state of traditional cultural heritage. Although the project remained theoretical and didn’t engage many students directly, it gave Vinh a foundation for his research into this subject.
Vinh later incorporated this topic into his college application essay, expressing his ambition to connect youth with meaningful traditional music. He proposed modernizing these art forms to appeal to Gen Z while preserving their cultural essence. Vinh is particularly impressed by contemporary songs that incorporate traditional elements, which inspired his commitment to this cause.
Additionally, Vinh hopes to educate young people about the origins and history of cultural heritages, such as the birth of “Đờn ca tài tử” and its renowned figures. Learning, he believes, becomes far more effective when one understands the historical context, as it fosters academic growth, cultural awareness, and a love for one’s homeland.

Making a Last-Minute Change to His Application
The college application process was a challenging period for Vinh. Starting later than most of his peers, he decided to rewrite his essays and only submitted his application in January. As his friends began receiving acceptance letters and scholarships, the pressure mounted. However, Vinh’s determination remained steadfast.
"I’ve made it this far—nothing is impossible," he thought, pouring his efforts into crafting an application that authentically reflected his personality. “Submitting the application was such a relief because I knew I had given it my all,” he said. Even before receiving results, Vinh felt proud of himself for persevering.

Choosing DePauw for His Development Journey
Vinh ultimately chose DePauw University, a decision he believes aligns with his interests, academic aspirations, and financial considerations. He is particularly excited about DePauw’s new School of Business and Leadership, which focuses on his intended major.
DePauw offers intriguing opportunities, including exchange programs and off-campus study options in South America and Europe. It also provides initiatives in media, management, and environmental studies—some of which support research. Notably, the Management Fellow Program guarantees an internship in the third year, a prospect that greatly appeals to Vinh.
He believes DePauw values creativity and individuality in its students while fostering leadership and a curiosity for learning. With its diverse international student body, the university will offer Vinh valuable experiences in adaptability and global perspective.
Vinh’s message to others is, “Everyone has their own journey, so choose to pursue what makes you happy.”

MiYork wishes Vinh great success on his path to pursuing his dreams!
